You Can’t Miss

Then Goliath, a Philistine champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of Israel. He was over nine feet tall! He wore a bronze helmet, and his bronze coat of mail weighed 125 pounds] He also wore bronze leg armor, and he carried a bronze javelin on his shoulder. The shaft of his spear was as heavy and thick as a weaver’s beam, tipped with an iron spearhead that weighed 15 pounds. His armor bearer walked ahead of him carrying a shield.

Goliath stood and shouted a taunt across to the Israelites. “Why are you all coming out to fight?” he called. “I am the Philistine champion, but you are only the servants of Saul. Choose one man to come down here and fight me! If he kills me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, you will be our slaves! 10 I defy the armies of Israel today! Send me a man who will fight me!” 11 When Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified and deeply shaken.

16 For forty days, every morning and evening, the Philistine champion strutted in front of the Israelite army.

I Sam 17:4-11, 17

In the famous story of David and Goliath, the Bible tells us that the giant came back twice a day for 40-days looking for someone who would face him. David heard the threats, and knew he must duel with this bully. David realized that an enemy like Goliath never leaves on his own.

Your giants are the same way. They will never leave on their own…They will threaten you and those you love. Why should they leave? Until you stand and fight in Jesus’ name, they win every time.

I can only imagine David seeing his reflection in the water as he goes down to the brook to gather his weapon of choice…five smooth stones. I wonder if he realized he was looking at a giant killer that day?

Maybe you drive a bus, work from home, sell cars, or work in real estate, and you never imagine yourself slaying giants. There will come a defining moment for every person. A moment that intersects life, and alters what is and what will be. In those times, it is there you will find your destiny. His whole life was preparing David for this day. David had been learning in the classroom of hard knocks: tending sheep, working alone, and dealing with wild animals. God had been grooming David to deal with his Giant! Remember, just like David, God has been preparing you!

David needed Goliath. He didn’t realize it, of course. To him fighting Goliath was simply the next thing God had called him to do. But he needed Goliath in order to gain the confidence of the people. To show that he truly was qualified to be their king. The people had to know that the man they followed was worthy of their trust. David proved it by defeating Goliath.

Perhaps you need to rethink the way you see THE GIANT you have been facing. When Goliath came against the Israelites, the soldiers all thought, “He’s so big we can never kill him.” David looked at the same giant and thought, “He’s so big I can’t miss.”
